For centuries, the Iberian Peninsula was home to prosperous Jewish communities. We do not know with absolute accuracy when did Jewish life begun there, but there seems to be evidence that dates back to the I century A.D. Most of the Jews in the area were called Sephardic, including Castile and Portugal, but those of Catalonia were known by other names. However, all together, with its philosophy scholars, scientists, halakhists, Talmudists…, constitute a unique immaterial heritage that spread all over the world after the decrees of expulsion in Castile and Aragon in 1492, and Portugal in 1497.
