Description
Montserrat is a rocky massif traditionally considered the most important and significant mountain in Catalonia. It is located 30 km from the centre of Barcelona. In this mountain is the Sanctuary and monastery of Montserrat dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat.
The word mont means mountain and serrat means sawed in Catalan. This name is given because of its peculiar morphology, in which it seems as if they had tried to saw it with a giant saw. Since according to legend was found the image of the virgin in the Santa Cova, Montserrat has been linked to spirituality. In addition to the monastery, the mountain has an outstanding number of small churches and emitas, some of them abandoned, such as Santa Cecilia, Sant Benet, Sant Joan or Sant Jeroni.
The Virgin, popularly known as “la Moreneta” because of its dark colour, is a Romanesque wood carving dating from the end of the 12th century. Its colour is the result of the transformation of the varnish over time. The festival of the Virgin of Montserrat is celebrated on 27 April. The Virgin is the patron saint of Catalonia.
